first certain kind show ever [redux]

show was fun. anna and nic played like true rhythm heros, while i just made a lotta noise and blood. we played “stand by me” with just bass/drums/singing at the end. yay.

last trains, true to form, rocked.

mr k, i did not stay. many apologies.

poetry reading on thursday was okay. i’m tired of hippies.

next weekend i get to see kickball and starfucker and ghosties and other bands in the city of roses. and perhaps the bins?

faces plses

how’m i spending my friday afternoon, boys and grrls? why, with my
favrite lady, of course. but she’s asleeping, so i’m checking in with
my favrite band: the faces, all settling in to a nice spree of youtube
videos.

seriously. best. fucking. rock band. ever. i honestly think that
really, and would argue that to the death if need be. [clause: i don't
mean rock in the loose sense, i mean 60s dinosaur rock, rock n roll,
whatever you'd call er]. best dressed, too.

but that’s not the point of this terrainaus shogunate session. the
point is youtube videos. lotsa them. so if you’v got a moment with
nothin to do, have a seat and avail yrself.

i’m losing you

wasting time at two am

kill the spore, save the plant

doing an open mic potery reading this thursday at the morning glory cafe at like seven i think. and then there’s that show on saturday. funny thing: i’m psyched to play, but even more psyched to see the last trains again, and that’s not cuz i’m dreading playing or anny that crap (cuz i got over being scared a while ago) it’s just that i love the hell out of that band so much.saw darjeeling ltd. in the words of radio man tom scharpling: “i didn’t like it . . . I LOVED IT.”

the tender bird sessions with anna cordis go strikingly well. we might have product by the weekend, nm002, yknow.

just checked out jim ford for the first time the other week. he’s great. thanks, ma, fr the heads up.

pierced arrows were excellent the other night.

what i caught of chance became fate’s set was stunning as well. they’re kind’ve like skwm. they’re also really, really, super airtight. and tough.

wordpress is being dumb. i can’t unalign the text from the center. so this is how the post’ll look. “look at me, i could be centerfield.”

got a show next saturday. the real debut, with one of my favrites to come of this town. much thanks to them for inviting us to play. yall should come, make me feel nice and enjoy some other damn fine bands in the process.

i’m doing a split ep w/ anna cordis, except we’re both playing on all the songs and writing them together. she’s doing most of the lyrics/singing and i’m doing most of the foundational songwriting/guitar, but really we’re all doing evrything. it’s called the “tender bird” ep. it’s ridiculously cute and pretty, just like us. it’s ridiculously overinstrumented, which is always a fun route to take. damn good autumn music.

brought my kit home from jal’s and set it up in my room. at long last i’m a drummer again. i spent too long without playing.

oh yeah. got an b+/a- on the rough draft of my senior paper. it means that if i’d turned in the rough draft as the final, i would’ve got that grade. so on the final i’m gettin much ayes across the board. that’s good cuz it’s the biggest thing i ever done academically. sucker’s like eighteen pages. good for me. once i’m done with that, high school will be an utter joke, hardly worth the breath it takes to dis on it. oughta buy myself an ice cream cone or something. sheesh.

ps: gimme tinnitus gives honorable mention to the city of eugene and its band, a certain kind.

pierced arrows with chance became fate at the wandering goat? hell yes i am there. thursday evenening, lads and ladies. it should be good. it should be great. i hear that the pierced arrows play “over the edge,” a song they did not play when i saw them as dead moon in cottage grovei would have dearly loved to see it, and perhaps will yet. i will brazenly yell that request, dudes, and that’s not a thing i often  ( evar )  do.

for the past four or five days, this bird has been throwing itself repeatedly at my windows. i know it’s some kind’v omen, i just don’t know how to interprate it.

before i buckle down and record a minimal-ass album, i’m gonna do a superlayed ep with the helps from anna cordis. we’ll call it the “tender bird ep.” and it will be much fun t make. read: mathy and intricate, which is not usually how i roll, but sometimes and i’ve got a few songs to show it.

oh man speaking of such music i have been hitting the joan of arc so hrd lately. they get a wierd amount of hate from the indie rockers, which is frustrating and makes little sense, as they are by no means a crap band. they are, in fact, one of america’s greatest, in terms of output, creativity, earnesty, originality and so forth and so on. (and guitar playing. damn.) is it because they used to be in an emo band? cap’n jazz was fucking great, as was a lot of that proto-emo stuff. no, sirs, i jst don’t get it. at all. (and ps tim kinsella’s lyrics are really, really good. poetically sound, and lyrically awesome. not many lyrics are poetically sound, people, while still being good as lyrics. much hats go off).

on bartering

shit, bartering is great. i’ve a lack of it. y’know, trading things. for instance:

1. a guy wants the old pickup my ma has. he doesn’t have the money, so he’s helping her fix the sink and various other odds and ends in exchange.

2. i’m doing an english to spanish translation for my ma’s work. as payment, her cooworker gave me a huge ass jar of honey.

call me a sentimental sucker for the whole community vibe, but i think our culture lacks it. i don’t mean in a dumb ass pta sense, either. i mean people just being good to eachother in trivial but genuine ways. we’re so reserved, not really doing shit like this because we’re too afraid to even look at each other. myself being no exception. yuk, man.

also: pete and pete rocks. thank you, nic, for lending those discs to me. i’ve watched most of them. i was startled as hell to see iggy pop on the screen. turns out i had watched quite a bit of that show as a kid (being big on nickelodeon at the time). it’s great.

trying not to work on my paper: a deep study on the samurai films of kihachi okamoto. rough draft due wednesday. i’m twelve pages in. think i’ll do a late night to try an kill a lot of it. but first i haff to put it off for a little while more before i’m ready. hence that which you now read.

there’s this actor, tatsuya nakadai, who stars in two of the movies i’m focusing on and is ridiculously good. in _kill!_ he plays a loveable, lighthearted ronin who’s pure of heart and avoids violence at all costs. in _sword of doom_ he plays a sociopathic, insane samurai who’s addicted to killing and who’s dazed, deliberate mannerisms give me nightmares every single night since the first time i saw it. he does both of these roles excellently.

he also played the king lear part in ran and was in a bunch of other kurosawa movies. anyway, if you’re into sixties samurai film, i’m sure you know about him or at least have seen him a bunch, cuz he was in as many of those movies as mifune was in, a lot of the time with mifune. as you can see in the picture at the top, he stole my haircut. translinear fashion theft.

i ate a burger today and a burger yesterday. both times made me feel like crap. it’s just too much food, and not in a good way. that’s like, the dark side of being full. ( i’m talking good, restaurant burgers here. but still. )

rough chuckles, these okamoto films. violent and depressing in a way that the violence is anti violent violence because it’s so depressing. nobody accomplishes anything, they just sabatoge their own causes.  he portrays violence more as a character than as ameans to an end. at this character is a malevolent bastard. ok. i should be writing this in my paper, rather than here.

first certain kind show ever

so the show last evening went as follows: we learned a modern lovers song at the last minute, i had dinner at some high brow place with anna’s family, nobody showed up except for two of the last trains dudes (one of whom lives there) we watched videos of their old hardcore bands, tacocat was having transmission problems and didn’t get there until eleven or something and were nice people, anna got tired and we left, i got home and became enamored of the word “dickl3″ (as you can see below) and drank milk and ate enchiladas and read michael stuart ware’s _pegasus carousel_ and then went to sleep. a telling debut for “the best band in town” . . . that is, that we rock! fatty dickl3!

also: saw the last trains on thursday and they were great. still had that same effect of making me very happy. we’re playing with them on the twenty seventh. i’m not sure where. with mr k’s orchestra.

i learned that tim kinsella’s no longer in make believe and that is unfortunate but also it’s exciting to see what they’ll do without him. i mean, they’re all smart enough musicians to take that loss tastefully, i would think.
